Diamond Quality - Certified Diamonds

Diamonds are beautiful to look at and come with a hefty price tag. But what exactly are they? How do they garner such a high price? And why do the prices vary so wildly? The simplest explanation is that a diamond's cost is dependent on its overall quality. So how do you establish diamonds quality, and how can you judge whether you are receiving a quality diamond? Keep reading for a brief rundown on what makes a quality diamond.

What is a diamond?

A diamond is compressed carbon. Diamonds are formed deep within the earth's crust and slowly push towards the surface until uncovered or mined. They are made from a single element, carbon, and are incredibly strong and will last centuries. You can read more on the history of the diamond here.

How is a diamond’s quality established?

A diamond's quality is based on what is commonly referred to as the 4C’s. That is, carat, cut, clarity and colour.

Carats are measured in the physical weight of the gem. One carat is equal to 0.200 grams subdivided into 100 points. This measure is the most objective aspect when establishing a diamond's quality. Diamonds with more carats are rarer and cost much more than their smaller counterparts. The price is not directly proportional to the carats. For example, a half-carat diamond will not be exactly half of a full carat diamond price. The larger diamonds are rarer; they will cost you more than double.

Cut is the most aesthetic measure of a diamond's quality. The nicer the cut, the better the diamond will look. When measuring for quality, the diamond grader essentially evaluates the cutter’s skill in shaping your diamond. The more precise the cut, the more appealing the diamond will be.

Clarity refers to whether the diamond has imperfections. An internal imperfection is known as inclusion, and an external imperfection is known as a blemish. Diamonds that contain no inclusion or blemishes are scarce and are very expensive. Most diamonds will have at least some inclusions or blemishes. But don’t worry; these inclusions and blemishes can usually only be seen with high magnification.

Colour is the final measure of quality. Diamonds come in many colours and range from light yellow hues to golden brown. Several other natural colours, including blue, red, and green. However, these other natural colours are considered ‘fancy’ and use a different grading system to white or colourless diamonds.

How can I ensure I am getting a good quality diamond?

Ensuring you get a good quality diamond is crucial when making your purchase. A great way to guarantee quality is to buy a certified diamond. Several companies offer this service; our recommended grader is Gia. Gia accredited multiple people to assess diamonds to ensure it passes all quality checks. Utilising multiple quality checks verifies that each assessor has made correct assertions on the quality of the gem. To buy Gia certified diamonds online, we recommend purchasing via Pelagrino & Co, which offer a full range of Gia certified diamonds.
